TRIBUTE TO '77-'78 SHAMROCKS
"They gave us ulcers,
They gave us nervous breakdowns,
But they kept their promise
And gave us the District Crown."
This verse, which is seen on the a banner in the gym lobby, signifies the 1977 football season perfectly.
In setting a new school season record of 9-3, the Shamrocks brought home the first district title since 1974 and made Byrne's first appearance in the state finals since 1959.
The 'Rocks nine game winning streak was also a new school record.
The season seemed to turn around after the third game. Trailing 22-6 at the half to sixth ranked Class A Hull-Daisetta, the 'Rocks returned from the locker rooms fired up and scored three unanswered touchdowns for the comeback of the year, a 26-22 upset of the Bobcats. From there the 'Rocks proceeded to win seven in a row, including a 17-8 homecoming victory over Houston Marian, and a trip to Rice Stadium for the State Finals.
In district action, the Shamrocks scored on their very first play from scrimmage and crowned cross county rival Beaumont Kelly 23-12. The followingweek, the 'Rocks once again came from behind, trailing 16-7, to Galveston O'Connell in Galveston.
Bi-District saw the Marion Colts invading the Shamrock Stadium for the second of the year. And for the second time the Colts were sent home whipped, this time 35-13.
In the State Finals, the Shamrocks-fashioned comeback effort was not enough though, as the St. Pious Panthers (led by Gary Kubiak) downed the 'Rocks 21-13. Although, it may not have been a fitting end to a perfect season, Bishop Byrne can say what 14 other private schools in TCIL Class 2A can't. "We were STATE FINALIST in '77".
